first off, at the risk of being just slightly repetitive, i'd like to re-post an old link that already exists on one of the older threads here:

www.fusionanomaly.net/2001.html

that page contains a discussion of the movie 2001: A Space Oddysey as an alchemical allegory. scroll down till you find the little photo of Terrence McKenna on your right. the relevant discussion begins in a block of text immediately after that.

and NOW for something new...well, new to me anyway...last night i watched Alejandro Jodorowsky's early movie The Holy Mountain. good stuff! it's about an alchemist who leads a group of people on a spiritual quest in the form of an ascent of a sacred mountain. folks, i'm quite sure that most of you would appreciate this movie. check it out! it's very rich & rewarding.
please use the rest of this thread to discuss films with an obvious or not-so-obvious alchemical/hermetic theme.

sheesh! pretty quiet on this old thread. i'd've thought that folks would've had more to say about alchemy/hermetica related movies. at any rate, someone recently told me about a documentary narrated by Terrence McKenna titled The Alchemical Dream, focusing especially on the Elizabethan alchemist (etc.!) John Dee. has anyone here seen it? someone uploaded the whole cotton pickin' thing to Google Video. i plan to watch it later.

Thanks for the tip on the John Dee documentary. Holy Mountain is my favorite of all the
Jodorosky movies. I remember watching it for the first time and not expecting so much sybolism. I think I'm going to rewatch it when I get home tonight :)

Thanks for bringing this one to my attention, it looks great. Having a copy of the true and faithful relation, i would really love to see how he is portrayed. Got something to do this afternoon! :)

I knew about the John Dee movie, but last time I checked I couldn't find it anywhere.

Thanks for pointing out that it is on Netflix!

watched The Alchemical Dream today. good stuff! would make a good double feature, i think, with The Holy Mountain, or, alternately, perhaps with Derek Jarman's movie Jubilee, which doesn't involve alchemy, but Queen Elizabeth I and John Dee appear as major characters in it.

At first glance, this may seem off topic, but I find the Roman Polanski movie, "The Ninth Gate" to be heavily influenced by alchemical thought. Starring Johnny Depp and Emmanuelle Seigner, this film follows the adventures of Depp's character, a somewhat sleazy rare book dealer who is launched on a journey up the Tree of Life. The imagery of this movie is taken directly from the Book of Thoth tarot cards and is heavily influenced by Crowley's qabbalistic and alchemical teachings. Check the scenes in the movie against the corresponding Tarot trumps and you'll see what I mean.

It's only recently that I started seeing Crowley's teachings primarily in terms of alchemy, but I recently woke up to the discovery that alchemy is mostly what they are about. This has fanned a previously mild interest in alchemy to what promises to become a roaring flame flaring up to calcinate my soul and produce the Stone of the Wise in time. "The Ninth Gate" is very instructive in revealing the process once I realized just what I was looking at.

          With love under will,
