from the Alchemistica newletter, some little known news on South American alchemy:

> I'd like to contribute something that isn't very well known in the English speaking alchemy world.
>>>
> There is a city in Uruguay (South America) called Piriápolis built in 1980 by an alchemist called Francisco Piria (1847 - 1933).
>>>
> The city is full with alchemical symbols and a huge castle. Mr Piria also wrote an utopian book (loosely translated) "The triumph of socialism - What will be of my country in 200 years". Take into account that "socialism" in Uruguay is something different from what it is commonly associated in the post-Cold War world.
>
>>
> The book itself, (which I believe is not translated to English), is full of alchemical references. He imagines that Uruguay in 2098 is a society in which "Alchemy has won", its principles adopted into society and Uruguay being a "socialist alchemical utopia".
>
>>
> In the link below, there is a section called "El triunfo de la Alquimia" which is very interesting to read if you know Spanish.

>> Little is talked about alchemy in South America, but rest assured, there are practitioners.

> If you ever go to Uruguay, or Argentina, it's a nice place to visit.

Sergio, the outline for the work proposed under "Apuntes para una historia del Hermetismo en América y especialmente en Chile" is fascinating.

It is well known in Argentina that José de San Martín was a mason. The influences of Hermeticism in the Southern Cone seem to be extensive whether in literature, art, or in the buildings of Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Santiago.
